A tour of the heritage town of Dhahran Al Janoub

Embark on a cultural and heritage tour within the historic town of Dhahran Al Janoub, located in the heart of Dhahran Al Janoub Governorate, which is one of the oldest historical towns in the south of the Kingdom, and represents a distinctive model of traditional mountain architecture and the social and economic life that has flourished in the region over hundreds of years.

The town lies on the historic route linking Asir and Yemen, and was an important stop for trade caravans and travelers, granting it a prominent economic and social status throughout history. It is also distinguished by its proximity to several historical sites, such as the ancient Elephant Road, and is considered today one of the most prominent historical landmarks in southern Saudi Arabia, as well as a destination for researchers and those interested in Saudi heritage.

The experience begins with a visit to the historic old mosque located in the heart of the heritage town, which studies and documents indicate is over a thousand years old. The mosque captivates visitors with its unique architectural details and inscriptions. It was once the main mosque where Friday and Eid prayers were held, and a center for religious education and social gatherings. Visitors will also learn about the stages of its restoration and renovation, and how it was included in Prince Mohammed bin Salman's project to develop historic mosques while preserving their traditional architectural character.

After that, the tour continues around the town, which is one of the largest mud villages with more than 150 houses, to learn about some of the houses in which the work of government departments was carried out in the past, and to explain the way in which the affairs of the town were managed at that time.

The tour includes:
Standing at the site where King Fahd bin Abdulaziz, may God have mercy on him, met with the people of the town, and learning about the details of this historic event and his generous directive to move the people to another location and grant them residential land for building and living.

The experience also includes a visit to a rural lodge and a number of mud houses, to learn about the details of traditional construction, the number of floors, and the local materials used, such as stone, mud, and wood, which are still in use today.

Visitors also enjoy experiencing the traditional dishes that the heritage town and Dhahran Al Janoub were famous for in the past, while learning about how they were prepared and their role in old social life.

The tour concludes with a climb to the roof of one of the mud buildings to enjoy a unique view of Wadi Al-Arin and the farms surrounding the town, along with an explanation of the nature of the work of the locals on these farms and the method of irrigation from the valley.
